摘 要：For an outsider, unaware of the Czechoslovak Cold War realities, the notion of growing up behind the Iron Curtain might be associated with an extreme sense of apartness, even isolation, from Western culture in general and American culture in particular. Yet, throughout the Nineteen-Sixties, Seventies and Eighties the flow of American cultural products into the Czech lands did not cease. American films were played in numerous theaters throughout the country, American music was reaching the population on the airwaves from Austria, Bavaria or Luxembourg as well as on cassettes and vinyl records from virtually everywhere, and translations of American literature were offered to a culturally hungry readership in relatively spare, but vast editions.

The lecture focuses on the reception of American media and cultural products in the Czech lands from the Nineteen-Sixties to the present.

摘 要：The lecture will present the main principles of one of the current theories of information structure – the theory of Functional Sentence Perspective developed by Jan Firbas and his followers in the Czech Republic. The outline of the theory will be supplemented by an example of its application in the interpretation and translation of texts.
